Projects : Technical school
Last year, in the immediate
vicinity of Guatemala City and with assistance from
Flor Ayuda, a new
school was opened for elementary and continuing
education which during this school year already
serves
400 students. The students at this school are from
poor families.
When these boys and girls graduate from this school
there is no school for further technical training.
There is a great need in Guatemala for craftsmen who
would be able to make a good living for
themselves and their families if they were able to
get a diploma. Thats why the idea to start a
technical school has been gaining ground in
Guatemala. This school would be established for the
less
fortunate (mostly Mayan children) who have completed
the first 3 years of secondary education.
Flor Ayuda has again agreed to start a campaign to
gather funds in The Netherlands and other countries
to finance the building of this school and to
sponsor the first 2 years of its operation. After
the
initial 2 years the Ministry of Education in
Guatemala would for the most part take over the
financial
operation. In short the goal of this project is to
build a school for technical education and its
operation for the first 2 years.
The project consists of the following activities:
-
Acquisition of a building site, big
enough to eventually house enough classrooms for ten
different disciplines.
-
During the first phase classrooms
will be built for four specialties: electrical, auto
mechanics, professional cooking and clinical
laboratory worker.
Further a principals office,
administrative space and toilets. In the first year
capacity will be for 80 students and 160 in the
second year, as evenly as possible distributed
between boys and girls. Professional technical
personnel will be hired to develop the curriculum.
-
Financial sponsoring of the school
during the first 2 years will be needed because
contributions from the parents will not be
sufficient. During this time the school will have to
be
operated without government support until all
procedures to obtain sponsorship from the Guatemalan
Ministry of Education will be completed.
The young people graduating from
this technical school will be able to enter the
national work force
with up to date knowledge and the proper skills to
develop themselves to their full potential.
