Integral development of Sacoj Chiquito (2005 and 2006)

This project was known as “DISC” (Desarrrollo Integral de Sacoj Chiquito) and was focused on:

1.
Building a school, which the local population named “Escuela Dr. Theo Bloem”, and financing
the educational costs during the start-up phase. The school has 16 classrooms, a computer room and a
library. The school started the school year of 2007 with close to 400 students in elementary
education and 22 in secondary education. In the coming years these numbers will increase, mainly in
secondary school. A new educational system was introduced in the Dr. Theo Bloem School. Students work
in smaller groups and are stimulated to be actively involved with their own development.

2.
Development of the community by providing courses and supervision to enable people to give
direction to their own lives. Development of women was central to this idea. By talking about their
actual problems and finding their own solutions, the women formed groups in a natural way, which are
going to be social safety nets.

3.
Improvement of living conditions and health, as garbage is no longer deposited on the streets
but is collected for transport to an official garbage dump.

The costs for this project were about EUR 250,000, an investment in the future of Guatemala.

Sacoj Chiquito is a village of about 3000 poor Maya Indians near the capital city of Guatemala.
Living conditions are very poor and many children don’t go to school. Very often a family consists of
a single mother with many children. The women have low income, are illiterate and are often alone in
the responsibility for their children. It is important that the parents become aware of the need of
going to school and are able to make this happen for their children.
