About us
Flor Ayuda was started in 1996 by a
group of friends in The Netherlands. One of them,
Dr. Bloem, had just returned from an extended stay
in Guatemala. During his work there as a volunteer
medical doctor in the Jac de Wit clinic in the El
Milagro district of the city of Mixco (near
Guatemala City), he had been shocked by the enormous
social and economic poverty of its Indian population.
We decided to set as our goal
helping the poorest segment of the Guatemalan
population. In the first few years this meant
providing medical, organizational and material help
to the Jac de Wit Clinic and to a number of health
clinics in rural Indian villages. Direct material
help was given to many Mayan families. Later on we
helped to provide running water and housing for
refugees and homeless people.
At the present time our main focus
is on education. Since 2001 our foundation has built
6 schools. We established “Marimba”, a
scholarshipprogram for students in secondary and
vocational schools. We also established a special
aid program for the Dr Bloem School. Through these
programs at least 300 students are assured of a good
education. We believe that education is one of the
driving forces to help the Mayan population on the
road to a better future after centuries of
oppression.
